Newbie questions.

OK - I have had a read through the forum and have been considering a move from windows for a while. Currently run XP and usual office stuff along with Skype. I am not an IT expert so don't know everything, all help appreciated.

I am considering buying a Toshiba NB100 with Ubuntu 8.04 for travel etc and as a backup to my current config. The plan being to see how I get on with and also as a lighter travel machine. Plus it would help me get familiar with Linux and see if I want to move more machines to Linux and phase it in as we upgrade in the future.

Questions
Is that machine a good configuration to do what I need?
Should I get 1GB of memory as opposed to the 512MB or will I notice much of a difference with Linux anyway?
Should I get something with a solid state drive rather than traditional HDD (for reliabilty and battery life)?
When looking for software to download, is Ubuntu a standard version of linux as there are lots listed on the OO.o site or will it work with any version that says linux?
I usually access our server (Windows small business 2003) with remote desktop software to pull files, check accounts, logins etc - will I still be able to do this and if so what is a good program to use?
Am I stuck with windows for iTunes?
Should I install Wine to run things like iTunes, Google Sketchup and other non Linux programs?

Thanks for the advice.

Multiple device Syncing - GooSync??.

OK- I hope this makes sense.

Just got a Unbuntu Netbook for traveling etc and I want to sync contacts etc. Here is where the fun starts. My main business machine is an MS XP using Outlook which syncs with my SE p990i so that all contacts, calender and stuff is up to date. I also sync a private mobile - Nokia E51 which is used on holidays and travel when away - main mobile diverts to office but certain people can contact me directly if required. It syncs with Outlook also.

Now here is the problem - trying to get these phone to sync with Ubuntu seems like a lot of fun but time consuming.

So my question is - has anyone used GooSync to Sync with Evolution in Ubuntu? I figure it could be the handiest option. Main machine updates GooSync so everything is online and then Evolution pulls everything back in. Reverse the process when I get back and everthing is nice and organised.

Or am I dreaming??

Question about ubuntu install.

Hi,

I downloaded the Ubuntu zip file, burned it to a cd and did a reboot.

I ran the CD in windows (because it didnt pick up on the reboot) and chose install alongside windows and i set 10GB for the partition.

Then i did a reboot and the Ubuntu desktop is working great.

When i go to install it by clicking the icon on the desktop it asks about the partition stuff.

I was told to choose the first option but it says use 100% of the HD. Does this mean 100% of the partition for Ubuntu or the whole HD ?

I am worried my windows partition will get deleted if i choose this option.

Thanks for any info.

Free online/downloadable GIMP tutorial?.

Hi all, I installed GIMP on Kubuntu and was just wondering if there was anywhere I could learn how to use it effectively for free? Just for general ****ing around with it, I don't need it for anything in particular and I don't need a professional level of competence.

Thanks.

Most efficient linux distro?..

Howdy all. I'm looking for a minimalist, non-resource-intensive linux distro (or versions of distros).

I'm dual-booting a slightly outdated version of ubuntu with windows Xp, and ubuntu feels sluggish in comparison.

Anyone got any ideas?.Or maybe ways to optimize my current OS?.

Thanks!.

Spotify: An Alternative to Music Piracy.

Spotify is a music service that gives users access to a huge library of music, through a lightweight application that looks like a mashup of the best parts of iTunes and Last.fm. Music is streamed, partly supported by P2P technology, but it plays instantly, like we’ve never seen before. One of the software engineers at Spotify is Ludvig Strigeus, the creator of uTorrent. It is therefore no surprise that the application uses very few resources, just 12k memory when we tested it. The rumor goes that some of the money made when uTorrent sold to BitTorrent Inc., has actually been invested in Spotify, an application that competes with piracy.
When we asked Andres Sehr of Spotify to describe the service, he told us “Spotify is a new way of enjoying music. We believe Spotify provides a viable alternative to music piracy. We think the way forward is to create a service better than piracy, thereby converting users into a legal, sustainable alternative which also enriches the total music experience.”
The quality of the music on Spotify is comparable to 160kbps MP3s, which is more than decent for a streaming application. To fill its library, Spotify has cut deals with EMI, Warner Music, Sony BMG and three other major labels, which all responded positively to the new concept. Interestingly, Spotify also uses P2P technology to stream the more frequently accessed tracks.
“Spotify uses a hybrid p2p system where music is delivered both by our servers and using P2P,” Andres Sehr said. “This allows us to deliver the long tail of music which may not be very popular, as well as quickly serve up the latest hits that the majority of users listen to. P2P allows us to both increase the speed that we deliver music and also lower the cost of streaming it.”
Aside from being a music streaming application, Spotify also allows users to create and share playlists with each other, the top 100 tracks of 2008 according to Pitchfork editors for example. On top of that, the Spotify interface helps you to discover new artists with its “similar artists” and “artist radio” feature.
The overall response from Spotify users seems to be very positive, but can it compete with piracy? Time will have to tell, but Spotify invites are actively being traded within the BitTorrent community, and it has even been well received on some of the most elite music trackers.
One user at the music tracker What.cd wrote: “Honestly it’s going to be huge. I’ve been browsing and playing from its seemingly endless music catalogue all afternoon, it loads as if it’s playing from local files, so fast, so easy. If it’s this great in such early beta stages then I can’t imagine where its going. I feel like buying another laptop to have permanently rigged.”
Spotify is not perfect though. One of the mentioned downsides is that it is not compatible with iPods and other portable MP3 players. The Spotify team hasn’t ruled out the option of an iPod compatible version in the future, but for now they will focus on optimizing the Windows and Mac application.
Overall we can conclude that Spotify definitely has potential, but time will tell if it’s able to compete successfully with piracy. Spotify is currently in Beta stage, invites to the free (ad-supported) version can only be used in the UK, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Spain and France.

So just do this if you want to install it:

1) go to http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/
2) enter the following URL: https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/
3) Create your account, for UK postcode - check http://www.postcodesearch.org.uk/
4) Download client, works for mac/windows and perfect under linux with wine - note: client does not seems to check ip (yet) :-)

Quite cool, and it works perfectly.
