Thursday Sept. 25th blogging .
I created a Top 10 Blog list for SixApart’s Blogs.com list of Top 10 lists site. Â It’s called “Marc Canter’s Top 10 List of Open Social Networking Blogs” Â :-) Â I just love playing kingmaker. NOT. Apologies to all the homeboys and homegrrls who DIDN’T make it onto my list. Â I’m right between Popular Stock blogs and Tasty Vegan blogs.
This notion of Kevin Lynch (Adobe) Â talking about open source is comical. Â Where can I download the source code to Photoshop or Flash?
MySpace Music is like a feature that Cyworld has had for several years. Â They allow you to offer playlists of music to listen to, coupled to your MySpace page. Â This creates HUGE amounts of stickiness and is a viable busienss model as well!
Do not piss of Dave Letterman
When you piss of Warren Buffet then he’s not gonna forget.
Steve Gillmor and I did a Gillmor Gang about Portable Contacts and Y! OS.

The program for LeWeb8 is live now. Â I’ll be doing a panel with the BigCos - and we’ll be trying to find some Love for each other (Google, MySpace, Facebook, SixApart) and their customers. Â I’m sure we’ll find it - we just gotta all make sure to wear condoms.
Thank god I didn’t make it onto the Scoble list .
Is this strategy or tactics?
Tee Hee Hee - it worked - now I’m on Scoble’s list .
Robert updates it.
Isn’t the blogosphere an efficient beast that self corrects itself? How cool is that?
End of Sept ‘08 blogging .
What’s our solution to Microsoft’s lock-in Cloud _+ Client strategy ? The Open Mesh!
Doc on the LiveWeb = who’s son actually named it. Here’s Doc (right) with his son Allen.)
Yahoo’s social network is not a social network - it’s Y! OS - the whole thing.
Who cares what it’s called - moving software and storage off of your shoulders and onto someone else’s is a good thing. Cloiud, schoud, dowd, who cares what it’s called. Yet another example of buzzword du jour mentality.
I LOVE this notion of the user-centric web that Vysr is taking. Ideally they’d support more than just OpenSocial apps. Any widget should be able to be accessed - anywhere. Right on to Vysr - a key implementation of the ‘open mesh’.
I decided long ago to fight patents and to NEVER apply for one. I believe in Open Ideas and that’s what I’m doing with my book . NOTE: I really like Read/Write’s new ‘multi-page’ format. Triples the page views!
We’re gritty and cash flow positive. Are you?
Oh gosh - speaking of making money versus living off the VC tit - you mean social networks for Enterprise are a dime a dozen and many of them are going out of business. Oh gee.

50-42 .
My father was an old-time politico in Chicago and one of his old buddies - Don Rose - writes a column for a Chicago web site called the ‘Chicago Daily Observer’.
In today’s column he writes that Obama has taken a 50-42 lead in the polls.
I’m saying this in honor of my father who fought for civil rights, against the Vietnam War and would be tickled pink to see what Barack is up to.
I know he’s looking down from wherever he is - and laughing right now.
Sept. 30th. ‘08 blogging .
Congrats to Hooman and Ted on buying AddThis. Now you’ve got 20B views with no revenue model . Good luck on the ad thing.
Socialtext 3.0 looks to be a dashboard, social based mashup kit that works with Signals (a Twitter clone) and provides a wiki platform for custom taxonomies, private corporate communication and other “inside the Firewall” goodness. Congrats to Ross and Pete on this one. It’s a pure play open mesh platform!
Fred Wilson confirms that he’ll continue to pour money into his ventures and play the VC game while the rest of the world - burns. But if startups were based upon solid business models which generate cash flow positive results then they woudln’t be stuck sucking on the tit of their VCs. IMHO.
Between kicking ass and the shifting paradigms of GACL - it looks like Android will at least give iPhone a run for it’s money. That’s good - cause I will never buy an Apple product - ever again.
But GACL is more than just an iPhone killer. Its a Microsoft killer. Its an open web enabler. Its a game ender.
Heather Champ has always been one of my favs.

translate.google.com can now do 34 languages. THAT’s what I call a universal translator! Pretty coolio. I wonder when it’ll hit 100 languages?

Emerce Eday ‘08 - Rotterdam .
Here is a recording of the speech I gave in Rotterdam at EMERCE eDay ‘08. The recording is a bit disconcerting as the cameraman never turns towards the sldies - which is what I’m talking about and bouncing off of.
So here is the .ppt I used.
The night before they had a dinner at the Rotterdam City Hall (which is significant because it is the ONLY building left standing after the Nazi bombardment during the war) so I gave a short pitch on my book and what I was going to say the next day.

I like allot of things about dabbleboard. What they need is Text and filled objects and they’re ready to roll! I’ve been looking for a great drawing on-line program - forever!
Evernote API - Rafe likes it
Somebody please tell Richard MacManus that as long as you think of it as the ’semantic web’ - it ain’t gonna happen and there ain’t gonna BE any apps!
Congrats to Steve Case for getting out from under the RevoHealth debacle.
Sling gets ready to enter the content game.
Oh poor VCs. they’re getting their liquidity exist from their crap shoots. Whaaaaaaah!
Clearly Apple is heading into the living room. But i think they’ll find the road there a bit more challenging then hustling expensive laptops to yuppies or handheld devices.
Seems like every 55-70 years these dam banks have a crisis. You’d think they’d learn that HIGH RISK - sub-prime is NOT a good thing to invest in. And then when the whole thing falls apart - who bails them out? This is what’s called ‘gaming the system ‘.
I just hate banks, the entire credit system and capitalism in general. Unfortunately there are no real good alternatives. Living on a Kibbutz sounds nice - but then you have to deal with the fascist politics of Israel and inevitable war.
I’ve tried to ignore all this, believe in meritocracy or even go on my belief that I have made my contribution so I should be able to sit back and……….
Ooooooooooops - no - I can’t sit back. Gotta keep fighting.
It seems many people do not know what I did - already. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to fire my PR flacks.
I asked a famous VC the other day “have you ever heard of Director?” - “What’s Director ” - he said.

Lucy does a great go-go dancer and Mimi was off tune but enthusiastic. We’ll get Lisa involved somehow - I’d really like a funky Bassoon bass line

I certainly agree with Steve Gillmor in his criticism of Dare Obasanjo’s attack on the OWF.  I think the OWF is getting real work done. Not clear why Dare is acting like such a curmudgeon - but I hope he stops it.
And I really like it that Dave Winer is giving advice to Chris Messina . Â I’d love to get the two of them together around a Hookah or dancing girls. Â Steve has been doing a great job of facilitating the right conversations!
Kim Cameron brings up the importance of having an “identity selector”. Â The meta-identity system is growing BTW. Â Thank you to Kim for that! Â And the Infortmation card geeks.
Breadth is what allows us, as an industry, to create “one identity modelâ€Â in terms of application development, deployment and most important, user experience.
Congrats to Joseph and John and the geeks at Plaxo on FanPages!
Michael Arrington’s claims of being independent are laughable. Â TechCrunch defines the insider game that plays well with VCs, PF firms and folks who put on conferences - for $2,500 and up. Â So to claim he’s independent is like saying News Corp is not a major TV network.
I’m counting on Richard MacManus ot start asking the right questions of Gina and Marc A about Ning.  I just don’t buy the press release shiovel ware that everyone reprints.  Ning says they’ve had 500k people click to ‘create network’ button. Big whoop. Now what I really wanna know is:
- how many of these network pay them money. they claim 3% - anyone wanna place a bet on the truth fo that claim?
- how many networks have more than 5 people in them? More then 50? More than 500?
- when is it fair to call a network a network?
- at what point in the growth of a network does it become iral and the rate of growth increases?
Still waiting for the questions I poised over a year ago. Â So perhaps if someone else asks them - we’ll get answers. Â Cause bragging about 500K networks to justify taking $100M in funding is getting old.
I actually sat and listened to David Treadwell expalin what will get released at the upcoming PDC in terms of the Live Mesh backend .
I did a great Gillmor Gang show with just me, Dan Farber and Steve Gillmor  We talked about the VP debate, Microsoft, the bailout and Google.  Not necessarily in that order.
Scaling Hadoop to 4,000 nodes at Yahoo
This list of VC companies with their $100’s of millions of dollars is just sick. Weathering any storm should be done with good quality product and people and something called revenues. Duh! Ning taking $100M in cash says “we’ll never have to be profitable”. Oh goodey - now that’s a reason to put him on Facebook and eBay’s board.
Congrats to Om Malik for getting ready for the nuclear winter.
Congrats to NeFlix on their APIs  - finally!
1B songs streamed in ~two weeks . Â It took iTunes 5 years to sell 5B songs.
NetVibes starts to ‘white label’ to regions . Â :-)
As I was rummaging around YouTube - posting my family theme song  - I ran into these interviews  of Marc Canter and Slash - talking about his book on Guns n Roses . Not me - Marc Canter - but the third (maybe fourth generation) Canter who owns Canter’s Deli on Fairfax in West Hollywood.
Yes - innovation continues - but it’s not about getting VC funding or not.
Paul Boutin doesn’t say it  - so I will ”Melissa Gira Grant got laid, just not that kind of laid. She got laid - off.”
This GM Volt looks hot. It could well resusitate GMand the entire U.S. auto industry. Plug it in, go to work, come back = no gas. Uses normal AC outlets. That’s hot! I want one.
Oh God Lord - please just make patents go away.

I love the way Cisco is trying to justify their multi $100M campaign - which said and did - absolutely nothing. Â But it was great for positioning.
